Season: Spring

Midori: I feel like we're actually going to be stuck as a trio at this rate...
Tori: What's wrong with that? It's easier to remember.
Midori: Everything is wrong with that. We're not a trio.
Tori: Nevermind that. What are your favourite picture books? Even if you don't like reading, I'm sure you've read some, so you must have one or two that you enjoyed.
Tetora: Hm~mm. Let me think...
I think I liked the ones that left you feeling satisfied at the end. Like the one about the puppy wearing sandals?

Midori: Sandals...? Uh, do you mean "Puss in Boots"...?
Tetora: Oh, yeah! I think that's the one!
Tori: How did you get that wrong?
Tetora: I bet your favourite is one with lots of cute animals, Midori-kun.
Midori: I mean, yeah... But you could at least ask me for a title.
When the people around me know me so well, it makes me feel like I'm a shallow person, that's so depressing...
Tori: I dunno whether you're shallow, but you're resolute in what you like, Takamine. It makes you easy to understand.
So, what picture books do you like?
Midori: Mm~mm. It's kind of awkward to say this myself, but it is true that I'm happy as long as there are cute animals and everything is peaceful in the story.
I don't think I have a specific favourite...
Oh, wait. Maybe "The Town Musicians of Bremen" — the concept is cute... ♪
Tori: Ah, the one where animals stacked on top of each other to scare a robber off.
What about you, Shinobu? What kind of picture books did you like as a kid?
Shinobu: The picture books I read as a child weren't well-known like the ones already brought up, but more modern... I mostly read picture books that were recently released.
Tori: Oh, that's unusual. I thought most people would start out with classics like "Momotaro" or "Snow White".
Shinobu: Of course, I've read those before. But my favourite picture book isn't one of those.
I too wanted to read the same books as everyone else. But there was a serious, non-negotiable reason for why I couldn't...!
Tori: A serious reason...?

Shinobu: There are no famous picture books that have ninjas in them!
Midori: Now that you mention it... You're right, I can't think of any picture books with ninjas in them...
Shinobu: It is very unfortunate... Ninjas have always lived in the shadows...
In modern picture books, ninjas do have a chance to be in the spotlight, so I enjoyed reading a series with that.
Tetora: I'm not sure it really makes sense for ninjas to be in the spotlight, though~

Tori: Well, whatever. Thanks, I'll take your opinions into account.
Tetora: Are you gonna be able to decide on a motif for the project?
Tori: I've got a few ideas, but I still haven't found anything that stands out to me.
I want to look for a few more picture books to reference... Maybe I should head to another library.
Shinobu: Oh, come to think of it. The dorm's reading room does have a picture book section.
Since it's right here in the dorms, what about looking there before going to an external library?
Tori: Oh? I didn't realise that existed.
[Scene change]

Tori: Uhm...? These are fashion magazines, and this section is encyclopedias.
Oh come on, I don't see picture books anywhere. Did they really see a section for those?
—Oh, there are more volumes of this manga series now!
Wait, no. This isn't the time to stop and read manga.
What's this book about? "Fu... Furui, ima wakashuu[1]"...?
Who stocked this book for the reading room? Everyone is just stocking whatever they want, and now we have all sorts of books in here.
I guess it's possible that there are people who'd like this weird book...
I've searched the top, so let's try searching down here next...
—Oh, I found the picture book section!
Jeez, put it somewhere easier to find~ It's hidden in the bottom corner of the shelf, no wonder I was struggling to find it.
But this picture book... It's pretty tattered compared to the others. It's clearly a secondhand book, I wonder if someone in the dorms donated it?
Hm~mm...
Nope, they're all the same stories as the picture books I've already found.
It's pointless if they're all the same. Don't tell me I wasted my time comi—
Huh? Is this a picture book too?
Wow, it's got such a fancy cover~! Is this a first edition or something?
It feels pretty worn out, so I'm sure it's a secondhand book just like the other one, but this one's a nice antique item.
Picture books are usually small and thin so that they're easy for children to hold and read, but this one's thick and fancy like a dictionary.
Mm~mm. The title's in English, so I can't tell what story it's supposed to be. There are really few illustrations in here too.
...... (Skimming the book's pages)
Fufu, I guess the original owner really liked this book. I can tell, it's been read over and over.
When you like a book and read it often, the pages get all soft and wavy.
—Huh?! Woah! It's so worn out, a page just came off?!
... No, it was a bookmark.
Huh? There's something written on this bookmark. Um—

Tori: "To a different world"...?
Note↑: Tori has found the 古今和歌集 'kokin wakashuu', an anthology of Japanese poetry 'waka' from the Heian period. He does not know how to read the kanji for it.
